After Anna left, Anastasia was next seen by Kyle who sought her insight into how he could get home. What followed was a harrowing encounter that offered King Lawrence no hope.

Anna reunited with her brother when he and Darien retreated to the Old Judge’s house. Soon after, she was sent to Sister Leona’s convent to learn the ways of the Unseen One. Though she was warned of the convent’s destruction, Anna was not able to prevent the tragic fire and death of her many friends there. Anna put her gifts to use for Darien’s forces, becoming a voice of battle strategy. During the climactic conflict, she was held hostage by the Adrians along with other Marutians… until Darien returned to conquer.

He presents 200 Palatian medals to the king at a palace event. Married Michelle, sister of Prince George (though he had been promised marriage to Mary). Darien escapes the king’s assassination plot by visiting the Old Judge’s house, but quickly left there for other destinations. Despite his decisive victory at Kellen, Darien had to retreat to the Valley of the Rocks to face King Lawrence. Darien’s forces were surrounded there, yet were freed by a providential turn of events. Soon after, Darien set up camp in the Territory of Peace and gained support among the people of Marus. He saw through the plot of Baron Orkzy, eventually agreeing to help the Baron but with ulterior motives. Darien was tricked by the enemy forces into abandoning the real battlefield, which he believed led to King Lawrence’s death. Darien mourned the loss of the king, and fulfilled his call by wearing the crown himself.

King Lawrence

Key events: His call to the throne of Marus was identified by the Old Judge many decades before Darien’s Rise. Initially a good king, he has turned evil by the time of Darien’s first great victory (over Commander Soren). King Lawrence does everything within his power to see Darien quietly disappear… whether that is sending him on a useless mission or outright trying to shoot Darien with a crossbow. Darien had an opportunity to kill the king (on a train), but he would not harm one whom the Unseen One had called. The king’s greatest distress came when he learned of Adria, Monrovia and Palatia joining forces to come against Marus. He sought to “speak” with the Old Judge, who had perished; but he knew Anastasia could conjure him up. After being rebuked by the Old Judge and dragging Kyle into battle with him, King Lawrence died a coward.

Kyle also warned Darien when King Lawrence tried to shoot him with a crossbow. Kyle reunited with his sister when Darien retreated to the Old Judge’s house, escaping another assassination plot at the palace. He hoped against hope that his sister did not perish in the convent fire, and was elated when they found her. Kyle was always by Darien’s side on many journeys. However, the desire to “go home” led Kyle to visit the dark seer Anastasia… where he was captured by King Lawrence and enlisted as his “protector.” He witnessed the king’s tragic death.
