Description:
For a school report, Robyn Jacobs shares the testimony of how and why she became a Christian. When she's finished, her teacher, Mr. Southworth, asks if there are any questions. Oscar raises his hand. He asks several probing questions, but because he's usually one of the more slow students, everyone thinks he's joking. After class, Oscar corners Robyn and asks her: Why did Jesus have to die? Robyn scolds Oscar for making fun of her, but Oscar is earnest-he really wants to know. The only problem is, Robyn doesn't have an answer. She hems and haws and finally says that some things must simply be taken on faith. This doesn't satisfy Oscar. He goes to Whit's End to ask Whit, who has been coaching Connie in Bible verse memorization. Whit tells Connie to put her newfound knowledge to use, and Connie recites Scripture to answer Oscar's question. Oscar and Connie continue to talk in the library, and Robyn is impressed. She wants to know how Connie can quote Scripture so well. Whit says Connie has been studying every day since she became a Christian. Then Whit asks Robyn how much she studies. Robyn sheepishly admits she doesn't study at all. Whit mildly reproves her-Connie spends a half hour every morning searching the Bible, and she studies a chapter from both the Old and New Testaments every night. Robyn resolves to follow suit and embarks on a regimen of study. First, she gets up early like Connie, but Robyn falls asleep at her desk and is almost late for school. Then she tries reading in bed, but again Robyn nods off before she gets through one page. After several more tries, she reports back to Whit that she isn't cut out to study the Bible. Whit tells Robyn that Bible reading is important. He gives her several suggestions on how to commit Scripture to memory. Whit is especially emphatic that Robyn join a Bible study group. Robyn agrees to follow his suggestions, then Whit tells her of a study group she could join. He leads Robyn back to the library, where Connie and Oscar are intensely studying the Word. Robyn joins them, taking another step toward enriching her faith.

Questions:
Why did Robyn think she didn't have to study the Bible? Why is Bible study so important? Do you know all the scriptures Connie quoted? If someone asked you the question Oscar asked Robyn, would you be able to answer it? What would you say?
