Description:
There is a new private detective in town. His name is Harlow Doyle, and his motto is, "No case too big, too small, or too unusual". And it's a good thing. Soon after visiting Whit's End and meeting Whit, Harlow gets hired by Jessie to find something she's lost, her faith!
Whit isn't sure about this, but before he can say anything, Harlow takes off to examine every aspect of Jessie's life. What he finds is revealing: First of all, Jessie has been spending Sunday afternoons at the local bookstore, browsing through teen magazines, hardly uplifting reading material. Second, the local soccer league has started playing their games on Sunday mornings, causing Jessie to miss church. Third, Jessie's Bible school teacher, Dale Jacobs, has been giving boring lessons. Finally, Jessie's parents haven't been as diligent as they should in making sure she attends church and her Sunday night evangelism class.
Harlow puts all the facts together and deduces that the culprit responsible for taking Jessie's faith is . . . Maybe it's better not to say. But the lesson that Jessie learns about faith as being a matter of obedience and discipline is one that applies to all of us.
Questions:
What were some of reasons Jessie stopped attending church and her Bible school class? Why did Jessie think she had lost her faith? Did Jessie really lose her faith? Explain your answer. Have you ever felt like Jessie? If so, how can you begin to feel closer to God again?
