Description:
It's Campbell County Government Day. The student chosen to represent Odyssey Middle School is Charles Edward Thompson, also known as "Chunky". Chunky is hoping to be assigned to the sheriff's department, but he winds up in "The Division of Fluid Management", or in actual terms, the Department of Water and Sewage. It's run by a cranky, old woman named Mrs. Bavaqua who doesn't care for kids or Campbell County Government Day. To make matters worse, a storm has blown in, and it's raining all over town. Chunky does learn a lot about water and sewers, but all in all, it's a dull experience. Things get more interesting when Mrs. Bavaqua gets called away on an emergency, leaving Chunky to answer the phones! The emergency nearly turns into a disaster when the rain causes the system to back up at the treatment plant. Odyssey's water supply is in danger of becoming contaminated. The only one who can stop it is Chunky! Mrs. Bavaqua walks Chunky through the steps on the telephone, and Chunky saves the day! As a reward, he receives a citation from the city, a real sheriff's badge, and the knowledge that, no matter how big or small, every job is important in its own way.

Questions:
Why did Chunky think bad things always happen to him? What would you have done if you were in Chunky's place during the emergency? What have you learned about water and sewers?
