Continued from Part 1...
Whit, Tom, and Mandy sort through the journals and piece together the story of Agnes’s past, even while Agnes tells the same story to the truck driver. It all began when Agnes was 10 and met a girl at camp named Jo. The two of them became fast friends and decided to make a pact to meet every year at a tree by the lake. Even as they got older and became adults, they continued their pact and decided to meet every ten years on August 2nd at 6 p.m. Tom figures that through various interruptions, Agnes has missing their yearly meetings for 40 years.
Now, all they have to figure out is where the camp is. Nothing seems to turn up until Tom realizes that all of Agnes’s paintings at Hillingdale must be of the camp. They look through the paintings and it pieces together a picture of a special place. Tom and Agnes went there during their honeymoon! It’s just across the state line. Whit and Tom race off toward the camp, promising to fill Mandy in on all the details when they get back.
The two of them arrive at the location just as 6 o’clock approaches. Tom is dismayed to find the camp gone and a shopping center in its place. But then the two of them find Agnes on the shore of the lake. Just as they’re trying to figure everything out, Jo shows up! But it turns out that Jo is Joanne Allen. Tom and Whit are just as shocked as she is at this outcome. It turns out that Joanne and Agnes had been living within a few miles of each other for years and didn’t realize it. Agnes reveals that Joanne is the reason she became a Christian. Joanne doesn’t know what to say, but shows all of them a picture from the first camp. Tom and Whit are amazed, realizing why Agnes took such a shine to Mandy. Joanne looked exactly like Mandy when she was ten.
Joanne says goodbye to Agnes at Hillingdale, promising to visit her often. The two say goodbye, with their pact still intact.
